Aerobic Classes for Pre-School Children

While preschool aerobic classes might seem like a modern trend, their impact on children’s long-term health is undeniable. Annette Rawstrone, Deputy Editor of Nursery World, witnessed firsthand how these sessions are laying the groundwork for healthier adults. A compelling anecdote illustrates this point: three-year-old Amber’s playful critique of her grandfather’s tummy, followed by her advice on abdominal exercises, sparked a family-wide conversation about her nursery’s fitness program. This experience resonated so deeply with Amber’s aunt, Tanya Davie, that she brought Stretch-n-Grow to the UK.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by alarming statistics: approximately one in three children are overweight, and one in ten are obese. Critically, 80% of obese children are likely to carry this condition into adulthood. This carries significant health risks, including early signs of heart disease, respiratory problems, diabetes, orthopedic issues, and exacerbated asthma. Beyond physical health, overweight children often face the psychological burden of social stigma.

Early Fitness, Lasting Impact: How Stretch-n-Grow is Shaping Healthy Futures

Stretch-n-Grow addresses this critical issue by fostering healthy lifestyles from an early age. Tanya Davie, armed with an MSc in exercise and nutrition and teaching credentials, emphasizes that the program transcends mere exercise. “It impacts children holistically,” she explains, “from strengthening muscles to promoting healthy eating habits and explaining their importance.” The program’s success lies in its ability to deliver these messages in a fun, accessible way that resonates with young children, often leading to positive lifestyle changes within the entire family.

“I’m constantly amazed by the children’s insights,” Tanya recounts. “They’ll refuse sweets, citing their ‘treat day’ rules. Even at a young age, children grasp the impact of their choices when explained simply. They understand that healthy foods fuel their growing bodies. By instilling these values early, we create lifelong healthy habits.”

Tanya’s journey to Stretch-n-Grow began while she was exploring the development of a family fitness program for corporate clients. Her encounter with Stretch-n-Grow in Ireland, in early February 2003, was transformative. Both Tanya and her partner, Deno, were immediately impressed and committed to bringing the program to the UK. A meeting with founders Bob and Jill Manly soon followed, and by May 2003, training was complete. The team launched “Summer Activities” and prepared for a full market launch in September 2003, driven by a shared vision of empowering children with the tools for a lifetime of health and well-being.
